Flowers In Her Hair

by Aye Kairos

In honor of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's 76th birthday, today, on June 19th 2021, every supporter of democracy in Myanmar is wearing flowers in hair. We selected this poem to honor the lady who has paved the path for us to march toward freedom. May our love keep her safe. We once again pledge our commitment to fight for our rights in Myanmar and help those in need.

My mother wears flowers in her hair for she is a young girl & the matriarch. For a while, everyone stops & stares – Flowers? In hair? Who dares? – until one joins and then another. And soon, millions adorn glorious blooms on their heads for celebrations, declarations, determination for show of allegiance, defiance and disobedience –

Who can stop the season of bloom mountains of petals, sepals, stamens, pistils young leaf to mature trees, seeds, stems and roots going deeper?

This is what it means to be free To reach for the sun in the dark To run in the rain even when mud creeps up To go over & under & through the obstacles in our paths To believe in something — Something so true, irrepressible and wild –
